Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine in which essential oils derived from plants and herbs are used to treat various ailments of the body. Essential oils can come from any part of the plant, including the flowers, leaves, bark, or roots. For use in aromatherapy, essential oil must be extracted from the botanical source by way of a natural method, which usually is steam distillation or cold pressing. These non-toxic forms of extraction allow all of the plant’s healing properties to remain intact in the oil that is produced, resulting in therapeutic grade essential oils with many health benefits.

Pure tea tree oil is one of the most common essential oils, but there are others that are effective in treating conditions or promoting general skin or hair health. Here are some other oils that either work well in conjunction with natural tea tree oil, or can be used separately for similar results.

Tea tree essential oil has been utilized to treat a number of health conditions. It plays a big role in aromatherapy and is similar to jasmine essential oil and lemon essential oil, but it has its own unique properties as well. Below is a summary of tea tree oil’s medical uses, followed by a list of scholarly journal articles with scientific evidence of the oil’s effectiveness.

Tea Tree Oil and Skin

Over the years, there has been one skin condition most famously treated by tea tree essential oil: acne. In one widely cited study, a 5% solution of tea tree oil was compared to a 5% solution of benzoyl peroxide, an antibacterial compound found in many prescription and over-the-counter anti-acne medications. Although the tea tree oil worked slower, it cleared pimples and blackheads as well as the benzoyl peroxide, and did so with fewer side effects such as skin burning, peeling, and itching. Benzoyl peroxide also can cause severe allergic reactions in rare . . . → Continue: Uses for Tea Tree Essential Oil: Acne, Lice, Athlete’s Foot, Cold Sores, and More

Pure tea tree oil is one of the most popular essential oils used in aromatherapy. It is extracted from the leaves of an Australian tree called the Melaleuca alternifolia, or tea tree. Aborigines in Australia have used the essential oil for thousands of years to treat skin conditions like cuts, infections, and rashes.

Tea tree oil has antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. It can fight off different strains of bacteria and fungus, even some that are resistant to antibiotics. In some studies, tea tree essential oil has demonstrated effectiveness comparable to benzoyl peroxide and clotrimazole (known by the brand names Lotrimin and Mycelex). The oil gives a boost to the immune system, but generally does not result in the same side effects that harsher chemicals can induce.

Tea Tree Essential Oil Uses

The oil of the tea tree has been used as therapy for a variety of medical conditions. As mentioned above, it often is applied topically for skin ailments or simply . . . → Continue: Pure Tea Tree Oil: How Tea Tree Oil Products Can Benefit Your Health
